The Benefits of Patchouli
Patchouli is leafy herb with long stems and an even longer history. This relative of the mint family is known to reach about two to three feet in height, and blossoms beautiful pale pink and white flowers in the late fall.
This resilient plant is native to warm and wet regions of Asia, but is now cultivated all over the world (from China to South America and Vietnam to the Caribbean). Patchouli essential oils are one of the most pungent and versatile essential oils on the market.
Patchouli in History
During the 1700-1800’s, silk traders often used its leaves to deter moths from destroying their cloths as the scent was strong enough to keep many things away… which is why it is also frequently used as a natural insect repellent.
The strong scent of patchouli oils are often found in perfumes and natural deodorants, and are commonly used in creating incense (this scent was no stranger to the 1960’s hippie movement) and other household scented items.
Popular Patchouli Health Uses Today
There are a few ways to extract the essential oils from its leaves, but the benefits are seemingly endless. The most popular way to get the oil is through steam distillation, and the oils are actually extracted from boiled or dried leaves. Once extracted, the oil is used as:
- An antidepressant The oil of the plant is often used in aromatherapy due to the changes this scent has on hormones and other chemical compounds in your body. This typically happens by helping to release serotonin and dopamine, which naturally helps melt away feelings of anxiety or sadness.
- A fever reducer: Patchouli helps soothe internal inflammation and irritation, which makes it a great contender for solving headaches and fevers. The scent and chemical properties of the oil release triggered muscles and other compounds making this a good option for your next head cold.
