Now we all know and love koala bears, but did you know that eucalyptus leaves are more than just great food for these cute, snuggly animals? The oils extracted from these native Australian tree leaves provide powerful medicinal properties whether applied directly or inhaled.

However, the eucalyptus tree, formally know as the Tasmanian Blue Gum, produces incredibly strong oils which should not be applied directly to the skin or taken internally without diluting it first.

Eucalyptus in History

For many years, dried eucalyptus leaves and the oils extracted from them have been used for its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Treating and dressing wounds were some of the most popular uses, along with healing cuts, scrapes and even bug bites. Whether applying the leaves directly to a wound, or soaking the leaves to help extract oils – these leaves were popular years ago in medicine.

Today, many sources will say that studies have yet to prove the powerful medicinal effects, but certain theories are still followed today.

Popular Eucalyptus Uses Today

Eucalyptus oils and extracts are commonly used to treat respiratory problems and infections. The strong properties contained in these oils are known to help increase oxygen in your blood, which means assisting with opening air passages and lungs. For instance, when mixed with peppermint and coconut oil, eucalyptus oil can serve as an effective respiratory treatment, by creating your own “vapor rub.”

Even more popular is using eucalyptus scents in perfumes and air fresheners. One can easily add a few drops in several household cleaners, including soap, window cleaner, laundry detergent and practically any other home cleaning product (like toilet bowl cleaner or fresheners). Try adding a few drops into your vacuum canister for a fresh scent that has the ability to fight off mold.

Eucalyptus oils and extracts can do great things for our health and home, which is why here at Magic Fairy Candles we choose to include these scents in our organic candles, body sprays and more.
